Massachusetts House leaders rejected an attempt by a handful of well-financed multistate operators and politically connected dispensary owners that would have undermined the Commonwealth’s goal of fostering equitable participation in the industry.
Following an outcry from cannabis equity owners and advocates, the House elected not to adopt Amendment 10 to H. 4789, the economic development bill under consideration.
In response, Equitable Opportunities Now (EON) Policy Co-Chair Kevin Gilnack issued the following statement on behalf of EON and the Massachusetts Cannabis Equity Council (MCEC):
“On behalf of EON and the cannabis equity business operators of the Massachusetts Cannabis Equity Council, we extend our deepest gratitude to Speaker Ron Mariano, Ways & Means Chair Aaron Michlewitz, and the Massachusetts House of Representatives for rejecting an amendment that would have destabilized and devalued small cannabis businesses. We’d also like to thank the equity licensees, small business owners, and allies who made their voices heard.
“We commend House leadership and members for recognizing this proposal for what it is: an attempt to consolidate the market under the guise of equity and anti-monopolization efforts.
“With the state Senate poised to take up the economic development bill soon, we urge all Senators to reject the influence of MSO lobbyists and uphold the Commonwealth’s commitment to creating economic opportunities for communities impacted by the war on drugs. We hope both legislative branches focus on strengthening equity initiatives and supporting the entire cannabis industry moving forward.”
